Swimming at Brighton Beach

There is a non-profit swimming group that i found out about (Coney Island Brighton Beach Open Water Swimmers) that has weekend swims out on Coney Island, which is really a quick trip from my house by car or subway. …

The park has been off limits for almost all the past two months because of high levels of e-coli bacteria. All other beaches regularly tested by health officials in Brighton and the Campellford area got good results from water samples …

Virgin London – Brighton rider seeks advice?

Hi – I've managed to get a place on the London – Brighton this year; – so far my training has been to do the london marathon (I was already entered anyway, so .. ). Does anyone have any training advice?. Or general tips? (what's the pack like, should I carry spare tires, or that sort of thing) . I'm guessing if it's like marathoning, I should be doing some long rides; what's long in the context of a 50 odd mile ride?..
(Any constructive addvice greatfully recieved!)

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Diet – Slim people – what do you eat??!

I eat whatever I like and possibly about 3 times the amount of an average person. The reason I'm so thin is because I have a very fast metabolism and excercise through my daily activities. Cycling to work, walking, playing drums, bowling. I have only 4 per cent body fat but eat whatever I like. Maybe you will see this as lucky but it's also a curse when it comes to my food bills. Find hobbies which give you excercise but which you enjoy. People who try to diet or do mundane excercise they hate soon give up due to lack of results. If you relax and do what you like and eat what you like then you will find it easy to achieve your goals. Play tennis with your friends, go cycling to a village to enjoy the scenery or do some shopping. Park a mile from work and pick a route to walk the rest of the distance each day while listening to your I pod. There are many ways. Find the one which works for you not the one that works for us….I'm sure you don't want to play drums, go bowling and cycle to work everyday.

I used to swim a lot at Brighton when I was a kid…it had a big elevated deck all around – we'd jump off it – and short slides way above the water. Litigation fears would never allow it nowadays. April 27, 2009 6:28 AM · Chris said. …

Brighton offers a number of pleasant beaches; one of the most aesthetically pleasing is the pebble beach named Brighton Beach. This pebble beach quickly transitions to a lovely flat sandy sea bed that is great for swimming. …

There is something for everyone in the city of Brighton. Arts and entertainment are buzzing across the city from dusk until dawn. See comedy and cabaret at the Komedia, or top bands at the Brighton Centre, enjoy world music, opera and ballet at the Brighton Dome and west end shows at the Theatre Royal. The choice of entertainment in Brighton and Hove is endless!

The city also has some of the best clubs on the south-coast as well as a fantastic live music scene – a must for any socialite.

For the more wholesome visitor there’s nothing quite like a bracing walk along the prom or a stroll out to sea on the Brighton Pier to clear heads and revive appetites! On a wild and wintry day, it’s an exhilarating experience. However if you’d rather ride, take the Volk’s Electric Railway, England’s oldest, along Madeira Drive to Brighton Marina, admiring the fine Regency terraces as you go.

Experience all the thrills of traditional and modern rides on Brighton’s famous pier – there’s a wonderful atmosphere at dusk when the sun goes down and the lights come on, great for families and people watching!

Eating out in Brighton

Eating out in Brighton and Hove is second to none. With a fantastic range of restaurants, pubs and bars, eating out in Brighton is pure gastro heaven, whatever your tastes – or budget. Consistently topping awards at the Observer Food Awards, whether you’re looking for award winning cuisine, veggie treats, a tasty beachfront brunch or delicious cheap eats, eating out in Brighton is a culture in itself.

Places to visit in Brighton

Brighton is simply bursting with attractions. Experience the heritage of the Royal Pavilion and Preston Manor, indulge in the seaside fun of Brighton Pier, Brighton Marina and the Sea Life Centre or get cultural with Brighton & Hove Museums. A unique mix of heritage, culture and cosmopolitan fun, Brighton and Hove attractions cater for everyone.

For something more sedate try a boat trip or check out some of the stunning Brighton and Hove countryside sitting on Brighton’s doorstep. With a backdrop of the Sussex Downs and traditional English countryside, Brighton and Hove is also a great base for exploring the region.

Nightlife in Brighton

Brighton’s nightlife can very roughly be divided into three geographical areas; the seafront, which is conveniently removed from any close neighbours and has several clubs in the old arches; the Lanes and North Laine areas, where there is more variety and most clubs and bars appeal to a larger audience; and Kemp Town, which is also very diverse but with a stronger fringe touch and sense of bohemian abandon.

There are plenty of good bars and pubs in Brighton. Koba Bar, 135 Western Road; The Dorset, 28 North Road; and Brighton Rocks, 6 Rock Place, in Kemp Town are all recommended.

Brighton’s clubs include Concorde, which is a famous music and dance club; Ocean Rooms, a stylish nightclub with action on three floors; and Audio, a trendy, sophisticated club with regular gigs in an intimate environment. The choice is as varied as the people that frequent them and well worth exploring until you find your favourite!

The live music scene in Brighton is also very good with many excellent venues. Concorde also doubles up as a very popular rock venue. The Old Market in Hove is good for folk music. Both Komedia and the Brighton Dome are great venues for a wide range of musical styles and genres.

For more local reviews and to find out about all the best venues and places to visit in Brighton then visit We Love Local’s Brighton Guide. Full contact details are given for all local business listings. You can also read reviews and recommendations and view Brighton businesses on a large map.

Brighton sometimes known by the name London-by-the-Sea has one real star attraction, and that is the Brighton Pavilion. Less than 52 miles from London it is on the tourist trail, but be you a visitor to the shores of England or a permanent resident the Brighton Pavilion is a must see. It is very much a reminder of a bygone age, and this is what this pleasure palace serves to remind us of.

It was built in the late part of the eighteenth century by the then Prince Regent, later King George IV, and his excesses at that time left its name behind, because this time in English history is forever remembered as the Regency Period. The Regency Period stands for huge excess and extravagance, and it was at this time that Brighton emerged as the place for the fashionable to be seen, and it emerged at that time as Europe’s first seaside resort. It was therefore entirely fitting in that time of extravagance for this pseudo Oriental palace to be built, and even a glance at the external features will let you see instantly what is meant by the description of the Regency Period.

What we are talking about here is a fantasy structure the Disney World of its time with minarets and onion domes on the outside and total extravagance within. Inside it is incredibly ornate, and photographs do not do it justice, you have to go to Brighton and see it for yourself. Its popularity waned after the passage of the Regency Period and its regency fops were replaced by the more sober Victorian era. It is known that Queen Victoria ‘was not amused’ by the Brighton Pavilion and so Brighton became a place of faded brilliance, and became somewhat tatty by the twentieth century.

It undoubtedly has a unique charm in the winter, and deservedly remains popular with visitors keen to see the history, and enjoy the bracing breeze, the fish and chips, and the three mile promenade on the famous Brighton pier. Brighton has undergone quite a regeneration, and a well worth port of call are the Lanes, once best known for antiques but now full of cafes, and art galleries as well as good restaurants. Brighton and especially the Brighton Pavilion are well worth a trip to see.

As not only do they pay council tax, but they are also very likely to be footing the lions share of the bill for it through other stelth taxes.

With a 2007 population of 156,000, Brighton is a seaside city in the south east region of England. Brighton is a popular seaside destination, and although it has a shingle beach (little stones – not sand), the beach area does get crowded in the summer months. Brighton is more of a place to enjoy the fun by the beach, being chock-full of entertainment facilities, trendy shopping, hotels and restaurants. Brighton has a large student population which contributes to it’s vibrancy.

Brighton’s most striking and interesting landmark is the Royal Pavilion, also known as the Brighton Pavilion, which was built as a retreat by the Prince Regent in 1786. However, in 1849 Queen Victoria decided she didn’t care for the lack of privacy Brighton offered, with the 1841 arrival of the train bringing day trippers down from London. So the ornate Indian-influenced Palace was sold to the town for 53,000 pounds. For a fee, you can still tour the building.

The Victorian era saw the addition of fine Regency terraces along with the Grand Hotel in 1864. Two piers were subsequently added, the West Pier in 1866 and the Palace Pier, also called the Brighton Pier in 1899. The Brighton Pier features amusements and kiddy rides. The West Pier suffered a fire in 2003 and there are approved plans to replace it with the futuristic i360 observation tower.

There are some other areas in Brighton very much worth visiting: The Lanes is a fashionable shopping area which at one time was a hangout for disreputable antique dealers. The oldest surviving building in Brighton is St. Nicholas Church, which dates from 1350 and features a wonderful carved font. Also check out the Brunswick estate, which is an 1825 structure that exemplifies the Regency architecture that Brighton is known for.

For the first time since its institution in 1991, the World Horror Convention will take place in Europe on March 25-28. While past conventions have been held in the United States and Canada, the 2010 event hosted by the Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton, Sussex will focus on the European contribution to the horror genre. With its atmospheric seaside location and an abundance of smashing restaurants and hotels Brighton was a brilliant choice for Britain’s first World Horror Convention.

For professional entertainers, publishers, merchandisers, and of course, devoted fans, the World Horror Convention is a yearly highlight, and one of only a few international events solely dedicated to honouring frighteningly engaging storytelling in literature, film, music, and art. Originally incorporated into the World Fantasy Convention, the WHC was established as a separate conference after founders Beth Gwinn, Joann Parsons, and Maurine Dorris decided that the expanding horror industry deserved its own platform.

An Annual Fright Fest for All

The WHC isn’t just about entertainment; it is an occasion for serious fans and entertainers to discuss the history and trends that have influenced horror, as well as the critical aspects of crafting stories that reflect a changing society. Every year the convention is sponsored by the World Horror Society and features diverse programming ranging from author readings and open mic poetry to conference talks about the challenges of running a small press. Previous conventions have discussed a variety of social topics, such as female horror writers, Gay & Lesbian Issues in Horror, and Writing Horror in Different Cultures.

Over the four day period, industry professionals get the opportunity to market their new products, while fans and burgeoning writers take advantage of unique workshops with top horror authors like Mort Castle and Nancy Kilpatrick. Members can also attend film screenings, art shows, panel discussions, interviews, and book signings, as well as the presentation of the coveted Grand Master Award, reserved for a living legend in the horror industry. Former Grand Masters include Robert Bloch, Stephen King, Anne Rice, Harlan Ellison, Ray Bradbury, and Tanith Lee.

The 2010 World Horror Convention

The upcoming 2010 gathering has been themed “Brighton Shock!”: A Celebration of the European Horror Tradition from Victorian Times to the Present Day. Attendees will be treated to some of Brighton’s renowned sites at feature events like the Bram Stoker Awards (to be held at Brighton Pier) and the Brighton Ghost Walk, while prominent European artists such as Tanith Lee, Hugh Lamb, and Ingrid Pitt will serve as honoured guests at the events.

Hotels in Brighton will likely be overrun with reservations by January, so interested fans should apply for a membership right away. The current fee is £75, but is subject to increase in the weeks leading up to the event. The convention sponsors have negotiated discounts with three major hotels in Brighton for members only. To book through the organization or learn about other hotels Brighton has to offer, visit whc2010.org for information.

Check out his latest website which is all about what to look for when buying 4 cup coffee makers, as well as what to look for in small coffee makers.

When did $%^& kissing become an Olympic sport ?

What’s to see in Brighton?

Brighton is a very popular seaside resort for people in London and is sometimes called London-by-the-Sea.

The most significant landmark in the town would be the Royal Pavilion. This pavilion was constructed in the Indo-Saracenic style, similar to the Taj Mahal, which was common in India at the time.

The Pavilion was commissioned by the Prince Regent George Frederick, who later became King George IV. The interior of the building also has a distinctive style that shows elements of Chinese, Indian, Mughal and Islamic inspiration. During WWI it was used as a hospital and there’s now a memorial on the site for those who died in service.

As a seaside destination the next most important attraction is Brighton Beach itself. If you’re visiting during the summer then this blue-flag beach will be jam packed with tourists and indeed many locals who enjoy soaking up the sun that the south coast enjoys. It’s a pebble beach, but if you visit during low tide you can enjoy the sandy seabed that’s just a little further out. If you wouldn’t mind going au naturale there is a nudist section to the east of Brighton!

Also located on the beach is Brighton Pier, aka Palace Pier, which has an arcade with the customary attractions such as shops, restaurants and some funfair rides.

Located close to Brighton Pier is the Sea Life Centre which is the world’s oldest operating aquarium and is a testament of Victorian grandeur. There’s also a walkthrough underwater tunnel which is always popular with visitors.

Another “worlds oldest operating” is the Volks Electric Railway which runs from the Aquarium all the way to Black Rock which is located close to Brighton Marina. It was built in 1883 and operates during the summer months.

Brighton Marina has plenty of pubs and restaurants that provide a nice stopping point along your tour of the town. Enjoy the view of the boats coming and going. More restaurants and cafes can be found in Jubilee Square which is a little more modern and you will also find the Jubilee Library here.

For a taste of culture there are a number of theatres found within close proximity of each other, bound by the New Road, Jubilee Street and parts of North Laine. These theatres include the Theatre Royal, Pavilion Theatre, Corn Exchange Theatre, Dome Concert Hall Theatre and a few others.

For galleries, Brighton is not found wanting. For some modern art you can visit Fabrica. This gallery is housed in a renovated church and shows new works by international artists. Other contemporary art galleries include Ink D, Phoenix and Lighthouse. Another more conventional gallery is the Grand Parade located in Brighton’s central university campus and consists of the works of the students and some international artists.

For museums there’s the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, which covers the culture and art of Brighton itself. There’s also a Toy and Model Museum in the town that’s a real hidden gem if you have the time.

Located adjacent to Brighton is the village of Kempton, which is often referred to as the Gay Capital of Britain.

How to get to Brighton?

Brighton is located directly south of London, in Sussex, about 90 kilometres away by road.

If you are landing in Heathrow Airport and you want to drive out to Brighton, then you will want to get onto the M25 and head in an anti-clockwise direction south. At junction 7, take the M23 southern exit towards Brighton. Stay on the M23 as it becomes the A23 and this should take you right into the heart of Brighton.

If you are driving out from London city centre, then you will need to get south of the Thames and onto the A23 which can take you all the way to your destination.

Seaside towns tend to be a summer time extravagance but Brighton has something for everyone all year round.

Mairead Foley writes for http://www.Novacarhire.com/ where you can book car hire at airports, ferry ports, rail stations, cities and towns all over the world.
