Coney Island/Brighton Beach Boardwalk at night?

I'm going to my junior high prom at Gargulios restaurant, it ends at 10. I was thinking of walking back home via the boardwalk/beach with my date (I live in Manhattan Beach) Now I'm wondering if its safe to be around there from 10-11 ish?

I know the distance of the boardwalk, I've been there many times, just not at night.
